I love that Ethan is true to the character we've come to know, and proves again what an admirable Master he is, as well as a good match for Merit. The question of doing what is honorable comes up again and again in this series, particularly in this installment as she's faced with a new allegiance she's made with the Red Guard that may threaten her standing as Sentinel and protector of her House. I love that Merit is such a kickass character, but who still struggles with her vulnerability. The series' trademark humor, great action sequences, and complicated political intrigue are all here, in ways that feel familiar and yet still fresh. On top of that, vampires are disappearing-and a face from the past comes back to make trouble for Merit and Ethan. In this particular installment, the vampires' Cadogan House is in a state of flux as its status among the other Houses is called into question. This series shows no signs of slowing down or relying on tired, recycled story lines or forced conflict to move the action forward. That's not the case with Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires, however. By that point, authors are usually stuck on rules they've set for how the relationships play out, or they're having trouble coming up with new problems without changing the nature of certain characters. With most Book Sevens, I am usually checking release schedules and making all kinds of martyred noises about how series should quit while they're ahead. Someone has to pay for the sins of the fathers.Īnd they’ll be paying the price with their souls. Soon his wants turn into an obsession, one that sweeps Violet into his games as they fall madly, deeply in love with each other, the type of first love that can drive a person mad.īut it’s a love with tragic consequences.īoth the truth – and the lies – not only threaten to tear them apart, but threaten their very lives. Besides, Vicente has always gotten everything he wants – why shouldn’t he have Violet too? Beautiful and edgy with a vulnerability he can’t resist, Violet tempts Vicente from afar and though he promised himself he’d stay away from her, curiosity and lust are powerful forces. What Vicente doesn’t expect to find in San Francisco is Violet McQueen, the woman’s twenty-year old daughter. But when Vicente stumbles across someone he’s not supposed to know about – a woman from his father’s checkered past – he sets out to California to find her behind his father’s back. The son of an infamous drug lord, Vicente was born to help run the family business, which means he’s been raised on a throne of sordid pasts and dirty laundry, violence and pride. For Vicente Bernal, truth is all he’s known. One thing I could not decide whilst reading this story was who was the monster. I loved the way Naomi went from a timid person to a fighter. A grown woman playing with “dolls” and what she does to acquire them. What’s begins as an innocent story about a love and lust turns into something darker. A psychological story that has an ending you don’t see coming.īlind Capture by Virginia Johnson: What starts off to be a bad day for Naomi soon gets a lot worse, but she does not know this when she meets her mystery man off the internet. Whilst I was reading this story I actually felt sorry for Arissa and did doubt myself of the reality of the man in the dark. The Man in the Dark by Destiny Hawkins: Arissa and Lyla were on and off lovers, Arissa was unable to make a commitment due to the man in the dark. Whilst I knew Marlow was going to get what he wanted, I could never imagine what Marlow was going to do and the ending was apt to the book cover. Meeting Aubrey he gets his fix and finds a whole new high. Marlow has deprived himself of his addiction and this story shows just what he does to get his fix. Taking You Home by Elizabeth Cash: Marlow has an addiction, and it involves his toys and the female bodies. However when 12 female authors known for dark storytelling get together and write an anthology all in the aid of ASPCA (For us UK readers it’s a US charity American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) I knew it was a must have.įor this review, I going to pick my favourites So, a lot of people know I am not keen on a regular romance story. Tom’s off limits and loyal to her brother, 99%. Even worse is the knowledge that her twin brother Jamie saw him first, and claimed him forever as his best friend. No one measures up to Tom Valeska, aka the best man on Earth, not in looks, brain or heart. … If Darcy Barrett hadn’t met her dream man when she was eight years old, the rest of the male population wouldn’t be such a let-down. We hope you enjoy it! □ -ChelseaĬrush: a strong and often short-lived infatuation, particularly for someone beyond your reach… We are so excited to do our first joint review for the hotly anticipated next installment from Sally Thorne! Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure. After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. Kell was raised in Arnes -Red London -and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see. Schwab Kell is one of the last Antari -magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black. A Darker Shade of Magic, from #1 New York Times bestselling author V.E. Celaena is definitely one of those protagonists you dislike because of how prideful and stuck up she is. Is it sad that I was disappointed the best assassin doesn’t kill anyone in the book? Plus, she sparingly shows her skills even when she loves to brag about how good she is. Throne of Glass just didn’t hold up to the hype for me, or at least the first book did not. For the most part, the adult scenes are easy to skip and not central to the plot or understanding the story progression. I also respect your judgment to not start the series knowing how it will change in future books. Nothing is exchanged except a few heated kisses. There is a night that a guy sleeps in Celaena’s bed. There isn’t even a let’s “go to bed” and voila wake up in each other’s arms, but everyone knows what we were doing scene. One thing that pleasantly surprised me was no sex scenes. We don’t see her truly in her element until the next book, Crown of Midnight. Several times though, she thinks through how she would kill someone. None are attributed to the main character Celaena and self-proclaimed best assassin. There are many deaths in Throne of Glass. When the main character is an assassin and involved in a deadly competition against other killers, you can expect violence and killing to be in the book. Celaena on the UK Cover of Throne of Glass It's a huge adjustment for her but she soon makes friends in her new high school and neighborhood. The story is told by Ginny who has just moved across the country with her family. Having read it, I now understand the cover and title and I think they fit very well. I have to say that the title and the cover turned me off of this one to begin with and it was only Bree's high recommendation that got me to read it. I "stole" it from her, and I'm glad I did. It's really good." Hearing her say that was push I needed to be able to decide. I was standing next to Bree Despain, author of The Dark Divine and when it was her turn she said, "If no one wants this book then I'll just take it back. There was the opportunity to "steal" a book from someone who has already chosen. For the book swap we just laid out all the books and then everyone took turns picking one out. We had a book swap and I was lucky enough to end up with The Only Alien on the Planet by Kristen D. I never blogged about it (and I probably won't at this point) but it was a lot of fun and it was great to meet more bloggers and authors and be reacquainted with others.
